What about your use of drugs? Did that ever affect your level of control?

Sandy:

Oh yes.

Jill:

How?

Sandy:

Like I said, money. Number one, if I was really high, I would lose a level of control because I just . . . Whatever you want, just do it, let’s get out of it, you know. Even though it wasn’t a safe area but he wanted to park there, I would allow it because I would be real nervous, but I just wanted to get it out and get done. So my drug use has had . . . yes.

Rosalie, an Hispanic, 43-year-old heterosexual case manager at a women’s facility, emphasized this relationship between drug use and control:

Oh yeah, there’s a fair number. And I hear some of the women who don’t do it, who don’t use drugs, that say that she doesn’t do the drugs because she likes to be able to know what’s going on. She wants to be able to control everything, and know that if something’s wrong that she’s gonna know that something’s wrong and she can get out of the situation. You know, if she’s high, she can’t do that.
